Title 2006 Korean - Japanese Women's Academic Exchange Program
The Asian Center for Women's Studies, founded in 1995, has endeavored to develop research themes, categories, concepts and analytical tools based on Asian women's experiences and realities.

Through past activities, women's studies scholars in Korea and Japan have come to an understanding that we should try to acquire deeper knowledge of each other, based on our geographical proximity and historical relations.

This academic exchange program is made up of 2 parts, and .

The will begin with a visit to Changdeokgung on July 21, followed by a trip to Sudeoksa temple in Yesan on July 22 and end on July 23 with visits to the birthplaces of YU Gwansun in Cheonan and Empress Myeongseong in Yeoju. We hope this tour will be a chance for scholars from both countries to meet women from Korean history and learn about the memories and workings of history regarding these women, which may bring a better understanding of the cultural context of a society. We expect that the experience of this tour, in which Humanities scholars from both countries will be personally giving historical explanations to the tourists, will break down historical stereotypes and misunderstandings, and serve as an opportunity to renew our understandings of the history, culture and the local of Korea and Japan.

The will be held for two days, on July 24 and 25, made up of sessions such as 'Modern State, Women Scholars, Portrayal of Women,' 'Representation of the Mother of the State,' 'Women's Trans-local, Trans-national Travel,' and 'Feminist Re-evaluation of Korean - Japanese Historical/Cultural Relations.' We expect that this international symposium will serve as an opportunity to seek joint comparative research based on feminist understandings of concrete historical women and to begin a series of academic exchange.

This exchange program will serve as a foundation for women who have been 'the other' within their nation-state to step beyond the framework of the nation-state and see and hear for themselves how women of each country have lived, creating a momentum for change. It will also provide specific sources for creating an agenda of co-existence and peace in the civic dimension, which could be utilized as a case study for establishing an Asian regional community beyond Korea or Japan, and help in the planning of new exchange policy as a specific example of cultural exchange.
