The Asian Center for Women's Studies (ACWS) is preceded by the century-long history of Korean women and their efforts in creating a system of modern education at Ewha Womans University. The Korean Women's Institute (KWI) and an undergraduate program for Women's Studies were simultaneously inaugurated in 1977. A few years later, in 1982, the University started its graduate program in Women's Studies and extended Women's Studies to a doctoral program in 1990.

Since the 70s, women scholars of various Asian countries have sought to further the development of Women's Studies. In the process, they have felt the need to critique and augment Western perspectives in this field. At the same time, the scholars have also realized that in order to ultimately resolve women's issues, they would have to share and exchange knowledge and forge solidarity among themselves.

This led to the establishment of the Asian Center for Women's Studies (ACWS) in May 1995 at Ewha Womans University.

In recent years, ACWS has been conducting projects such as Women's Studies Curriculum Development in Asia; the publication of its journal, Asian Journal of Women's Studies (AJWS); and has undertaken work relating to the Organizing Committee for Women's World `05 and various research projects on women's issues.

The main objectives of the Asian Center for Women's Studies are:
Developing Women's Studies theories and practices based on Asian women's experience and
  identities

Strengthening Asian women's solidarity through international exchange of knowledge and
  cooperation.

Improving the quality of life of women all over the world by creating and expanding the scope and
  influence of Women's Studies.
